Companion is a small denim-focused brand created in 2013 by Iu Franquesa in Sabadell (Barcelona), a town with a long-established textile tradition. The Companion workshop was established as a symbol of craftsmanship and dedication, and here Iu makes each piece with flawless attention to detail.
To make his garments, Iu has the best raw material to hand: selvedge denim fabrics sourced from different Japanese shuttle looms more than a hundred years old and from the now-defunct White Oak factory of North Carolina’s Cone Mills company. Lately he has also been sourcing workwear fabrics produced on antique French looms.
But Companion garments don’t just attract attention for their fabrics. Equally striking is the incredible attention to detail which Iu devotes to each piece. The use of duck canvas stitched on the inside of the waistband, the insertion of selvedge detailing, Japanese hickory fabrics inside the pockets, chain-stitched buttonholes, customized copper buttons or the use of heritage Union Special and Singer sewing machines more than 70 years old for the seams are some of the elements which Iu normally uses for making connoisseur garments coveted around the world.
