The roots of Merz b. Schwanen date back to 1911 when Balthasar Merz started running a textile manufactory on the Swabian Alb in Germany. In 2011, Gitta and Peter Plotnicki re-established the brand after the descendants of the founder had shut down production.

Under the slogan "making basics - simply good basics," Merz b. Schwanen specializes in creating unique fabrics using rare 100-year-old loopwheel machines in the Swabian Alps in southwestern Germany to achieve an authentic vintage appearance. They also use artisan craftsmanship and their extensive experience to develop new styles with contemporary looks and feels.
