As the name suggests, this shawl collar work coat was worn by railroad workers in the 1930s.
This is a Muller & Bros. reproduction of the 1930's railroad mackinaw coat. It is double-breasted, with a shawl collar, belted back, handwarmer and cargo pockets. Because this is a workwear coat, this style had additional leather reinforcement at the pockets, sleeve bottom and cuffs. As was typical of these early production mackinaw coats, this one is unlined, with taped seams. While the shawl collar mackinaw style goes back to the 1910s, the leather reinforced railroad version didn't gain popularity until the 1920s. By the early 1940s, production was waning, though old coats of this style continued to be worn for years, a testament to their durability and warmth.
Crafted from a high-quality heavy Melton wool fabric, this military-style coat has the soft and smooth felted surface that is significant for Melton fabric. It is thick and super-warm, due to having been well fulled, which gives it a felt-like smooth surface. We have tested this coat in freezing temperatures, and we can ensure you that the thermal insulation and wind-resistant properties are outstanding.
The coat is made with all the original superior quality details such as horsehide trimmings on handwarmer pockets, flapped hip pockets and cuffs, adding durability and elegance. The inclusion of a belted waist is a great detail to ensure a proper fit and the corozo nut buttons are made up of very tightly wound organic fibres which give it excellent durability and scratch resistance.
As with all the Muller & Bros garments, the Rail Road coat construction is tough to beat. It is made entirely in Japan with internal seams being cotton taped for extra durability and distinction.
With a small atelier located in the mountains of Okayama, Muller & Bros. has become a choice brand since the launch of their first collection thanks to that inspiration in American and French workwear, a feature of each one of their garments, and to an incredible obsession with quality, construction and detailing.
