Studio D´Artisan 40th Anniversary "EARTH" Limited Edition Regular Straight Jeans

Studio D´Artisan 40th Anniversary "EARTH" Limited Edition Regular Straight Jeans

This Studio D'Artisan special edition is made to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the brand and is limited to 250 pairs in the entire world. They are one of the most exceptional jeans we have ever seen due to their organic properties. These are the ultimate organic jeans because they are made only with materials born from the earth, water, and the sun.

The cut is the iconic D-01 fit, a regular straight cut with a good amount of space in thighs, knees and calves, thus achieving a very comfortable while classic fit. They have a high rise.

For this Limited edition, Studio D'artisan has omitted all the metal hardware in an attempt to create a more conscious and natural pair of jeans. With both the warp & weft using a natural Fox cotton Foxfibre®, The warp yarn is dyed with Awa Masai natural indigo which is grown in Tokushima. The composition of the Selvedge also takes a sustainable stance and four-button fly featuring Original Studio D'Artisan leather-backed wooden buttons and a sewing thread made of pre-dyed cotton complete the full organic construction.

The weft yarns are woven with low tension and slightly bent. This gives the fabric a comfortable texture, even though it is 15oz.

The warp has been naturally dyed with the "Kasezome" method (Hank Dyeing). It is a very unique and time-consuming hand dyeing process in which colour penetration is maximized and the yarns retain their original texture. First, the skein of yarn is wrapped and washed in water, opening the fibers to receive the dye. It is then dipped into a indigo vat for up to forty-eight hours, washed, and redipped. This procedure is repeated several times. Once the desired color is achieved, the yarn is steamed to fix the dye to the fibers. Because it does not use as many chemicals as other forms of dyeing, Kasezome is less damaging to the material. The final indigo colour is also usually richer than those achieved by other dyeing methods.

Located in the Capay Valley of California northeast of San Francisco, Viriditas Farm is the place where Foxfibre® naturally colored cottons are bred and initial seed increases grown up. Rotational crops include heirloom Sonora wheat- the flavorful low-yield landrace which boasts the root system of a perennial. This wheat has quite literally added tons of root material and straw per acre which has been beautifully building the soil organic matter up with each crop year.

Fox Cotton (Natural Coloured Cotton) had a smaller fiber which was not suitable for mechanical looms used today, so this kept it from entering the commercial market. In 1982, Sally Fox a graduate in Integrated Pest Management from University of California with a master's degree started researching on coloured cotton and integrated her knowledge and experience in technology and introduced first long fiber of naturally coloured cotton. Sally Fox later started her company, Natural Cotton Colours, Inc. and got patents in different shades including: green, Coyote brown, Buffalo brown, and Palo Verde green under FoxFiber.

Later on the technology was further improved by a cotton breeder Raymond Bird in 1984. Bird began experimenting in Reedley, California, with red, green, and brown cotton to improve fiber quality. Later on Raymond Bird along with his brother and C. Harvey Campbell Jr., a California agronomist and cotton breeder, and formed BC Cotton Inc. to work with naturally coloured cottons. Naturally coloured cotton usually come in four standard colours - green, brown, red (a reddish brown) and mocha (similar to tan).

Sally Fox rediscovered and hand-bred a type of naturally coloured cotton (Fox fiber) in 1989 that could be originally dated back to approximately 5000 years ago. The naturally coloured cotton features the original colour of what has been altered to white. The naturally coloured cotton has the resilience of plants and the original functions of cotton due to the density of air, UV reflection, and strength of yarns when spinning. It is great for vintage jeans as it gives them a better texture than normal cotton when used in the weft and the weft itself will age nicely.

The lumens of cotton fibers give the characteristics and the functions cotton a quick-drying nature because of the high density of air. It also excels in retaining heat and is capable of cut off UV up to 95%.
