Cotton normally travels compressed into bales; Samurai lets its cotton \u003cstrong\u003emature for 30 to 50 days in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room\u003c\/strong\u003e until the crushed fiber recovers its original plumpness, and only then spins it into thread. That thread goes onto a \u003cstrong\u003evintage loopwheel machine in Wakayama\u003c\/strong\u003e — machines that on a normal day manage about a meter of fabric an hour. Here, because the \u003cstrong\u003ehigh-gauge thread and inlay knitting\u003c\/strong\u003e are so demanding, output falls to roughly \u003cstrong\u003e48 cm an hour\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe artwork takes the back: a \u003cstrong\u003emusha-e warrior drawn on the face of a kite\u003c\/strong\u003e, tilted in flight with its lines trailing behind it, printed in \u003cstrong\u003enavy, orange and red\u003c\/strong\u003e against the ivory ground. Above it the SAMURAI arch, below it the brand's \"Made in Japan — Genuine Indigo Denim\" lettering and a small \"Extra Tough\" script beside the kite — the graphic language of a vintage souvenir tee, done in Samurai's own hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eWhat the slow knitting buys is a small quantity of cloth with a very particular hand: soft, almost moist to the touch, and unusually thick for a loopwheel knit, yet with \u003cstrong\u003eless stretch than a standard hanging-knit jersey\u003c\/strong\u003e, so it holds its shape. The body comes off the machine as a tube, but the silhouette has been thought through as well, with \u003cstrong\u003esplit sides\u003c\/strong\u003e at the hem for an easier drape. \u003cstrong\u003e100% cotton.
