This fabric is special for us because it has been in production for years. The "Miyabi"(雅) fabric is an updated version of the iconic Tanuki Earth fabric. This fabric clocks in at 18.7oz and packs quite a few features. First of all, Tanuki used unbleached organic Peruvian cotton for the weft, which has an unbeatable feel. Combining that with a warp consisting of Texas and Californian cotton gives a texture that is stiff and crisp, almost like paper, has a lot of fuzziness. Also, there is a lot of slub happening here, allowing some of the off-white weft to peek through the surface. If you look closer, you will see different variations of blue hues. For this fabric, Tanuki used a combination of natural and pure indigo, which will result in some beautiful fades.
The Earth fabric was a massive success, and for various reasons, the brand could not bring it back as some of the cotton from the first run isn't available anymore, and the factory that spun the yarn has been destroyed. Nevertheless, Tanuki has worked on this fabric for over three years; this is why they call it Miyabi, which stands for elegance, grace, but also refinement (also on a spiritual level).
The Miyabi fabric is a true labour of love, and we are sure you will be happy to finally get a chance to get your hands on a new version of the Earth Fabric.
The jeans are made with all the superior-quality Tanuki details such as copper hardware, Tanuki logo embroidered back pocket detail, and the iconic Tanuki custom vegetable-tanned deerskin leather patch. The stitching for this one is quite remarkable: A variety of contrasting electric blue threads which really stand out.
The cut is a regular straight fit with a high rise.
Near the back pocket, there is the embroidered Tanuki 二 (Ni) logo, two parallel lines in Japanese Kanji representing the number 2. The lower line represents the past, tradition, the standard, peace. The upper line represents the future, change, strength. The red and blue colours of their logo refer to Japan's flag, honouring their roots as denim artisans.
The Tanuki brand was established in 2016 in Okayama Prefecture. It comprises a small group of great artisans who are passionate about denim and boast more than 30 years' experience in other brands in the industry. If there is something that characterizes Tanuki garments in addition to its modern cuts, it is the quality and variety of its fabrics, with prime importance given to the best cottons, natural indigo and the application of different types of tension on the shuttle looms when producing the fabrics.
