The Tanuki Heavy Shinkai Indigo t-shirt has been an absolute bestseller since 2020, and now this black version is another standout hit.
Crafted from the same remarkable fabric as the Shinkai indigo version, this t-shirt boasts a robust material that exudes quality. Made from a unique slub yarn, this robust fabric, reminiscent of hand-spun yarn, offers a distinct texture and durability. Using a count 8 yarn, thicker than standard, ensures longevity through countless washes while maintaining its shape.
This highly textured rope dyed fabric is pigment-dyed with Sumi (Japanese black ink), gradually fading over time to a beautiful grey tone. As many may know, there are few black fabrics that undergo rope-dyeing due to its labor and cost-intensive nature to change the dye tanks, often filled with indigo.
Like all Tanuki fabrics, this material is entirely made in Japan – from spinning to rope dyeing, knitting, and processing, all done in a small Japanese mill. Tanuki has named this fabric "Gyoten": the night before dawn. These shirts are meticulously crafted to the highest Japanese standards, featuring chunky blue side seams and reinforced ribs at the neck for added durability.
Featuring the embroidered Tanuki "二" (Ni) logo on the shoulder, symbolizing past and future in Japanese Kanji, with red and blue colors paying homage to Japan's flag and denim craftsmanship heritage.
The Tanuki brand was established in 2016 in Okayama Prefecture. It comprises a small group of great artisans who are passionate about denim and boast more than 30 years’ experience in other brands in the industry. If there is something that characterizes Tanuki garments in addition to its modern cuts, it is the quality and variety of its fabrics, with prime importance given to the best cottons, natural indigo and the application of different types of tension on the shuttle looms when producing the fabrics.
