ONI Asphalt is an extraordinary heavyweight Japanese selvedge denim masterpiece meticulously crafted by Oishi-san. Weighing in at an impressive 20oz, this denim takes the slub and nep concept to unprecedented heights, setting itself apart from other fabrics in the market.
What truly distinguishes the Asphalt is the unparalleled slubbiness of the yarn employed in its construction, coupled with a distinctive neppy surface. The result is a fabric that stands out as one of the most rugged and textured we've ever encountered. The yarn's uneven thickness gives rise to an exceptionally bumpy and irregular surface, adorned with distinctive white cotton balls, known as "neps."
Incorporating the iconic Oni relaxed tapered fit with a high-rise design, this modern silhouette seamlessly combines a slim profile with added room in the top block for enhanced comfort. The fit gradually tapers down to a narrow leg opening, offering a stylish yet comfortable wear.
These jeans have a standard sizing. The first batch of asphalt ran very small because they shrank significantly during the one wash, but this has been corrected in the pattern and now they have the usual ONI sizing. We recommend choosing your usual size. However, as always, we recommend checking the size chart first to find your perfect size. It is unsanforized but one washed, so there will be no shrinkage. The waist will experience the typical stretching seen in ONI denim due to the low tension weave, although not as much as the secret denim. Expect approximately 1 inches of stretching.
The legend of ONI is alive to this day. In recent years Oishi-San has devoted himself to experimenting with widely varying grammages, rough textures, different indigo dyeing techniques and novelty cuts while always maintaining a very limited production and wielding his experience in denim which now goes back more than 60 years.
