Inspired by original Uncle Sam work shirts from the late 1930s and early 1940s, this reproduction by The Rite Stufffaithfully revives one of the most iconic and functional work shirts ever made, now adapted for cold weather in a warm, soft Japanese chamois cloth. The fabric is a 5.5 oz Japanese-milled chamois made from 100% cotton plain weave, brushed on the outside to achieve a suede-like, velvet-soft texture while remaining smooth on the inside. Often mistaken for leather, chamois is actually a tightly woven cotton fabric developed to imitate suede, offering exceptional warmth, breathability and comfort with none of the itch. The fabric is one-washed and pre-shrunk, so there is no shrinkage to worry about. The Olive Drab colorway draws direct inspiration from WWI-era wool doughboy shirts, pairing effortlessly with raw denim and vintage workwear, delivering all the military character with pure comfort.

This shirt reproduces the legendary 1937 patented “E-Z Reach” cigarette pocket designed by A. Lipshie, featuring a double-layer construction on the left chest with a front compartment originally intended for cigarettes and a rear open-top pocket designed to protect contents from perspiration while allowing instant access. Along with the second oversized chest pocket, these offer exceptional storage capacity for everyday carry items such as wallets, lighters, notebooks, keys and even large smartphones, making this one of the most highly functional work shirts ever designed. To achieve full historical accuracy, an original vintage Uncle Sam shirt was sourced, along with a 1940s half-dozen Uncle Sam shirt box that has been recreated as the hang tag, together with a reproduction E-Z Reach die-cut sticker. Aside from a slightly shortened body length for modern wearability, all other details remain faithfully reproduced.

Built to uncompromising standards, this shirt features triple-chainstitched main seams, a period-correct 1930s collarand high, narrow back yoke, interlined collar and cuffs for structure, bartack reinforcements at stress points, selvedge side gussets for durability, and reproduction enamel-painted metal bowl buttons made in Japan that are designed to age and patina beautifully with wear. Every component is executed using Japanese-made materials, from the cotton thread to the woven labels and trims.
