Introducing our latest addition from the Tanuki collection - the SOGA denim fabric. This fabric was certainly worth the wait, and it's here to redefine your denim experience in the form of a modified Type II jacket. Crafted with utmost precision, the SOGA fabric is a heavyweight 15oz denim that boasts a unique and highly textured appearance. What sets it apart is its exceptional material source - Texas cotton, known for its quality and durability. But what truly makes the SOGA fabric stand out is its remarkable botanical dyeing process.
The fabric's distinctive yellowish hue is achieved through a blend of saffron and turmeric, resulting in a color reminiscent of Soga-iro. Soga-iro is a soft, slightly muted yellow shade inspired by the chrysanthemum flower, just as favored by Emperor Ninmyo during the Jowa period (834-848). The name "Soga" is derived from "Jowa," occasionally pronounced as "Jowa-iro."
Emperor Ninmyo's deep affection for yellow chrysanthemums is legendary, and he not only cultivated them extensively in the palace but also incorporated them into his attire. This historical influence adds a layer of cultural significance to the fabric.
While the botanical dyeing process may initially result in a stiff texture, fear not. With wear and time, the SOGA denim fabric will gradually transform, becoming as smooth and comfortable as all other Tanuki fabrics. It's a testament to the brand's commitment to both quality and comfort, ensuring you not only look great but also feel great in your denim.
This exclusive piece is a modified Type II jacket, offering extra length to accommodate convenient hand warmer pockets, providing both style and practicality. Additionally, it features interior pockets for added functionality, allowing you to carry your essentials with ease.
Despite being a Japanese jacket, like most Tanuki garments, we find the sizing of this Type II to be more Western than Japanese. If you usually wear a size M in American jackets, you'll find a suitable fit with this jacket in size 40 (M). However, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the perfect fit. It is unsanforized but once washed, so there will be no shrinkage.
The Tanuki brand was established in 2016 in Okayama Prefecture. It comprises a small group of great artisans who are passionate about denim and boast more than 30 years’ experience in other brands in the industry. If there is something that characterizes Tanuki garments in addition to its modern cuts, it is the quality and variety of its fabrics, with prime importance given to the best cottons, natural indigo and the application of different types of tension on the shuttle looms when producing the fabrics.
