The Buzz Rickson's BR11554 US Navy Pea Coat is a faithful reproduction of the 1910s model issued to petty officers during the formative era of American naval outerwear. Originating from the Dutch word piijekker (coarse woolen jacket), the pea coat served European militaries for centuries before becoming U.S. Navy standard by World War I.
The fabric is a high-density, thick melton wool characteristic of 1910s construction — considerably heavier than the lighter fabrics the Navy adopted from the 1930s onward. This dense wool provides exceptional warmth and durability for harsh maritime conditions, with a tightly felted surface that naturally resists wind and moisture.
The distinctive anchor buttons bear the 13-star seal of the United States, representing the original colonies from the 1777 Declaration of Independence. This historically significant detail was eliminated in later production runs for cost efficiency, making this 1910s reproduction particularly noteworthy for its period-correct construction. From the 1930s onward, the Navy moved to simpler hardware and lighter fabrics — this version captures the pea coat at its most authentic and robust.
Every functional detail reflects practical naval requirements. The large protective collar was designed to be raised and folded to shield sailors' faces from strong ocean winds, while vertical slit-type pockets serve as hand-warmer compartments for cold maritime duty — simple, purposeful design born from life at sea.
Faithfully recreated in Japan by Buzz Rickson's with uncompromising attention to materials, hardware, and construction — a definitive piece of American naval heritage.
Fit Notes: This pea coat fits true to size. Compared to most global American brands, a size 40 fits similarly to a standard American Medium. We recommend taking your usual size for a comfortable fit. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it with your best-fitting coat to ensure the right fit.
