Originating from the Dutch word piijekker (coarse woolen jacket), the pea coat served European militaries for centuries before becoming U.S. Navy standard by World War I.

The fabric is a high-density, thick melton wool characteristic of 1910s construction — considerably heavier than the lighter fabrics the Navy adopted from the 1930s onward. This dense wool provides exceptional warmth and durability for harsh maritime conditions, with a tightly felted surface that naturally resists wind and moisture.

The distinctive anchor buttons bear the 13-star seal of the United States, representing the original colonies from the 1777 Declaration of Independence.
