"Yatsu-Giku" Shippo Charm Large Kuro Black
A refined 925 silver charm handcrafted in Tokyo by Kobashi Studio — featuring a rare eight-petal chrysanthemum in "Sukashi" openwork with traditional Shippō-yaki enamel in a deep "Kuro" black tone.
The Kobashi Studio "Yatsu-Giku" Shippo Charm is a refined example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, combining historic symbolism with precise artisanal metalwork. Designed to pair perfectly with the Kobashi Studio Classic Silver Chain Necklace 3.1mm or 2.3mm, it adds a distinctive and meaningful detail to any necklace setup.
The design features the Yatsu-giku — a rare eight-petal chrysanthemum crest created using the traditional Japanese "Sukashi" openwork technique. Yatsu-giku literally means "eight-petal chrysanthemum" in Japanese — and the chrysanthemum has long been associated with longevity, renewal, and refinement in Japanese culture.
Measuring approximately 20mm in diameter, the charm is crafted from solid sterling 925 silver. The master mold was designed by Kobashi Studio founder Junichi Kobashi, and the surface is finished with a vintage-inspired handmade texture that embraces subtle file marks and natural variations — details that highlight the beauty of traditional craftsmanship.
At the center of the flower sits handcrafted Shippō-yaki enamel — a traditional Japanese enameling technique created by firing Japanese glass enamel onto a silver base at approximately 800°C. This process produces a rich, glossy surface with remarkable color depth. The enamel glazes here are still produced by a small workshop in Saitama founded in 1967, continuing a rare and specialized craft.
The color "Kuro" (black) represents a deep, traditional Japanese black tone — admired in Japanese aesthetics for its purity, balance, and quiet strength. The contrast between the dark enamel center and the silver openwork creates a striking yet understated visual presence.
Shippō-yaki is a historic Japanese craft with more than 400 years of history. Once celebrated worldwide in the early 20th century for its extraordinary craftsmanship, it has become increasingly rare today due to limited materials and a shrinking number of skilled artisans. This charm respectfully preserves the tradition while presenting it through a contemporary design.
The backside is engraved with "Kobashi" in Japanese characters, reinforcing its connection to the brand's origins. Each piece is presented in a luxurious Japanese pig suede pouch.
