The Studio D’Artisan 8185 “Bengara” Loopwheel Sweatshirt blends traditional Japanese dyeing techniques with classic American athleticwear, resulting in a garment rich in character, depth, and long-term durability. It is made from SDA’s original loopwheeled cotton fleece and garment-dyed using Bengara, an iron oxide pigment derived from ancient iron-rich soils that has been used in Japan for centuries.
Bengara dye is prized for both its distinctive earthy red tone and its exceptional durability. Unlike plant-based dyes, it is highly resistant to fading, allowing the color to remain stable while subtly deepening with wear. Historically, Bengara was used not only for textiles but also for lacquerware, ceramics, and the exterior walls of traditional Japanese buildings, reinforcing its cultural and functional significance.
This sweatshirt pays homage to the iconic Reverse Weave construction, first developed in 1938 to reduce shrinkage and increase durability. Studio D’Artisan recreates this concept using a vertically knit fleece that maintains its shape over time while offering a substantial, structured feel.
The fabric is spun on the historic Ishikawadai ring-spinning machine, Japan’s oldest operating spinner, and knitted slowly on a low-tension hanging loopwheel machine. After knitting, the fabric is rested beneath the machine to preserve the cotton’s natural texture, softness, and resilience—a process that modern high-speed production simply cannot replicate.
Finished with reverse weave construction, elongated ribbed cuffs, and durable double-needle stitching, the sweatshirt features a clean, slim silhouette that balances comfort with structure. Entirely made in Japan, it is a timeless piece that showcases Studio D’Artisan’s commitment to heritage craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and enduring quality.
Fit Notes: We find the sizing of this sweatshirt to be more Western than Japanese. If you usually wear a size M in American sweatshirts, you'll find a suitable fit with this piece in size M. However, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the perfect fit.
