Wonder Looper

WONDER LOOPER – Extraordinary Knitwear

t-shirts

Some brands start with a product. Wonder Looper started with an obsession.

Founded byRisa Saitoand Bahzad Trinos in Yokohama, Japan, Wonder Looper grew out of their shared experience and passion for quality clothing. Before starting the brand, both spent several years working at Naked & Famous, gaining first-hand experience in denim, apparel production and the importance of getting the details right.

They eventually began experimenting with chainstitch embroidery in their home studio, using antique, hand-operated machines to create intricate designs on T-shirts.

But there was a problem: the embroidery was beautiful; the T-shirts weren't.

The mass-produced blanks they were working with simply didn't feel worthy of the craftsmanship being put into them. Instead of compromising, Risa and Bahzad decided to make their own, and that decision would eventually become the foundation of Wonder Looper.

FROM CHAINSTITCH EMBROIDERY TO HEAVYWEIGHT KNITWEAR

The idea was simple: if the embroidery deserved a better T-shirt, they needed to create one themselves.

Drawing on their extensive experience in the apparel industry, Risa and Bahzad began working with Japanese mills and manufacturers to develop fabrics that could meet their standards.

The result was the Double Heavyweight T-Shirt, the garment that would become the foundation of Wonder Looper.

At around 12.1 oz / 409 gsm, the fabric is roughly twice the weight of a conventional heavyweight T-shirt. Knitted on tubular machines in Japan, it has a substantial hand and slightly uneven texture, while details such as the binder-neck collar and flat side seams reinforce the garment.

It's the kind of T-shirt that changes your idea of what a T-shirt can be.

But for Wonder Looper, making one exceptionally heavy T-shirt was only the beginning.

WHEN HEAVYWEIGHT ISN'T HEAVY ENOUGH

What makes Wonder Looper particularly interesting is that the brand isn't simply obsessed with making things heavier.

It's obsessed with finding interesting fabrics.

Once they had developed their heavyweight jersey, Risa and Bahzad began exploring different knitting techniques, fibres, textures and finishing processes. The collection gradually expanded beyond T-shirts into sweatshirts, hoodies and other knitwear, always with the same desire to experiment.

Among the standout fabrics are their ELS Recycled Cotton Slub, which brings an irregular texture and character to the surface, and their Amami Hand Dyed pieces, where Japanese craftsmanship and traditional dyeing techniques create garments that feel genuinely unique.

And then there are the sweatshirts.

Wonder Looper has taken the same philosophy into heavyweight French Terry, with some fabrics reaching an extraordinary 25.8 oz / 876 gsm.

At that point, we're well beyond what most people would consider heavyweight knitwear.

IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT WEIGHT

It would be easy to reduce Wonder Looper to a collection of extremely heavy T-shirts and sweatshirts.

But that would miss the point.

The weight is simply one expression of the brand's philosophy.

Wonder Looper is interested in what happens when you take something familiar and ask how far you can push it. What happens if you start with the best cotton? What if you use an unusual knitting machine? What if you experiment with the structure of the fabric? What if a sweatshirt could feel more like a piece of outerwear?

The result is knitwear with a very different presence.

These are garments you notice when you pick them up. You feel the fabric in your hands, see the texture and appreciate the construction before you even put them on.

And that's precisely what Risa and Bahzad set out to achieve.

TWO PEOPLE, ONE OBSESSION

Rather than starting with a large production operation, the brand grew from the curiosity of two people who wanted to make something better.

That spirit is still visible today, and that's what makes Wonder Looper so interesting to us at Redcast.
