The Type N-1 Deck Jacket stands as one of the most iconic garments ever issued by the U.S. Navy, originally developed in the early 1940s for ship crews operating in harsh maritime conditions. Buzz Rickson’s faithfully reproduces this historic piece with uncompromising attention to detail, based on original vintage examples supplied under the “Demotex-Ed” Naval Clothing Depot contract.
Introduced in 1945 as the successor to the earlier navy blue version, the khaki N-1 represents a refined evolution of the model. While the overall design remained consistent, several functional updates were implemented: the removal of alpaca lining at the inner cuffs, simplified internal construction, enlarged drawstring eyelets, and subtle repositioning of ventilation points—all accurately reproduced here.
The outer shell is constructed from 100% cotton “jungle cloth”, a densely woven grosgrain fabric engineered for wind resistance and durability. Its tight weave naturally repels water and blocks cold air, making it ideal for exposed deck conditions. Over time, the fabric develops a rich patina, enhancing its vintage character while maintaining structural integrity.
Inside, the jacket is fully lined with a luxurious alpaca and wool pile blend (40% wool / 35% alpaca / 25% cotton). This lining provides exceptional insulation, trapping warm air while remaining breathable. One of its most distinctive qualities is its ability to retain warmth even when damp, a critical feature for naval environments.
The construction reflects true military specifications. A MIL-SPEC brass zipper ensures durability and smooth operation, complemented by urea buttons and reinforced stitching throughout. The bold “U.S. NAVY” stencil across the chest is applied with period-correct finishing, designed to fade naturally with wear.
Wool knit cuffs offer additional protection against the cold, while the drawstring hem allows for adjustable fit and improved heat retention. The overall silhouette is a straight, regular fit, true to original military proportions—functional, timeless, and versatile.
Fit Notes: Buzz Rickson's jackets and coats run slightly smaller in size compared to your regular American size. Typically, if you wear a size M in American coats, you will need to select a size 42 (L) in this. However, individual body types can vary, so, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the perfect fit.
