At the center of these boots is an exceptional horse butt strip leather, sourced from a Japanese old-century tannery with decades of tanning expertise. Taken from the densest and strongest section of the hide, this leather is naturally thick, supple, and full of character. Its surface reveals subtle wave-like grain patterns and organic irregularities unique to horse butt, giving each pair a distinct personality from day one.

The leather is full aniline dyed, allowing the natural depth and texture to shine through. Over time, wear and sunlight bring out richer tones and a dramatic patina, with creasing and rolling that only genuine horsehide can develop. Tough yet flexible, it feels robust without stiffness and molds comfortably to the foot with use.

Construction matches the quality of the materials. The boots are built using traditional Goodyear welt construction, ensuring long-term durability, excellent stability, and the ability to resole them for decades of wear. A structured cork-filled sole and Double Helix’s original rubber outsole provide cushioning, grip, and everyday practicality while maintaining a classic workwear profile.

The 901 last delivers a balanced, ergonomic shape: secure through the heel and waist with comfortable room in the forefoot, making them supportive for long days while retaining a clean, sharp silhouette. Fit Notes: The Double Helix Matrix boots are built on the brand’s 901 last, which offers a well-balanced, anatomical shape. The heel and waist feel secure and moderately slim, while the midfoot, ball, and toe box provide generous width and volume — roughly comparable to an E width in the forefoot. This makes the last especially comfortable for medium to wide feet or for those who prefer a bit more room and all-day comfort without pressure points.

The last runs slightly large, so we recommend sizing down one full size from your standard US sneaker size or Brannock measurement. If you have wider feet or prefer extra room, consider sizing down only half a size.

In terms of fit, they are comparable to Red Wing boots (e.g., Double Helix US9 ≈ Red Wing 9). If you have experience with John Lofgren or Viberg, the sizing is very similar to most John Lofgren models and Viberg boots built on the 2030 or 2040 lasts.
