The book is based on Linton's fieldwork at Kanai Kougei, a small natural dorozome dye workshop on the remote southern Japanese island of Amami Ōshima. Having spent a year working within the workshop as a participant apprentice, Linton traces the relationships between the small workshop and a far larger web of forces — including environmental governance, economic change, labor, migration, and heritage preservation. What emerges is an argument that expands far beyond textiles: an examination of how craft practices connect rivers, forests, infrastructure, state policies, and consumer markets in a single delicate ecosystem.
The first half of the book focuses on labor, livelihoods, and alternative ways of living — exploring the history of Ōshima Tsumugi, the challenges facing traditional industries, and the motivations of craftspeople who relocate from metropolitan centers to rural Amami in pursuit of different relationships with work, community, and nature. The second half widens the analytical lens to investigate environmental governance, resource extraction, pollution, and conservation — arriving at a compelling critique of sustainability as a universalized concept, understanding it instead as an ongoing process rather than a fixed goal.
