Sashiko — a Japanese word meaning "little stabs" — refers to a traditional form of stitched reinforcement that produces a thick cloth covered with thousands of reinforcing stitches, creating incredible texture and a fabric that can withstand any amount of abuse.

Freenote has sourced this exceptional 14oz yarn-dyed sashiko fabric directly from Japan, then stonewashed the jacket to give it a soft, sea-going attitude and a broken-in hand feel from day one. The result is a textile with substantial body, deep texture, and a relaxed character that pairs the discipline of Japanese craftsmanship with the easy spirit of American workwear.

The silhouette draws directly from military heritage. The Midway pattern is based on the olive green herringbone twill (HBT) utility uniform from 1942 — a faithful reference point reinterpreted for contemporary wear. Two large chest pockets allude to its military origins, while modern refinements bring the jacket into a new century: four-hole horn buttons imported from Italy, a revised French placket at the front, and double-needle stitching at stress points for additional strength and longevity.
