Handcrafted in Japan, these boots pay homage to the iconic WWII U.S. Army service shoes while embodying contemporary functionality. Every detail reflects dedication to authenticity and quality — most notably the distinctive Munson last, patented in 1912 by U.S. Army doctor Edward Munson, and the Horween Chromexcel roughout-style uppers reminiscent of the originals. Famously worn by Steve McQueen in The Great Escape, the M-43 has long since transcended its military origins to become a cult piece of heritage footwear.

The uppers are crafted from Horween Chromexcel leather in natural tone — tanned over 28 days using Horween's proprietary combination tanning process, producing a leather with rich pull-up character, natural oils, and exceptional aging potential. Over time, the natural tone deepens into a warm, honey-hued patina unique to each wearer.

Construction follows traditional Goodyear welt methodology, fortified with USA-made storm welts for enhanced water resistance and structural integrity. Heavy single, triple, and quadruple stitching reinforces key stress areas, replicating original military specifications, while Japanese-made steel shanks provide stability and long-term arch support.

The sole unit features USA-made Vibram 700 soles and heels, delivering superior traction and longevity. An embossed padded leather heel pad adds comfort for all-day wear. The silhouette sits on a 1.5" stacked heel with a 6" shaft, built on the original Munson last for a roomy, comfort-first fit across the forefoot.

Packaged with a Japanese-made John Lofgren Bootmaker box and dust bags, these boots embody the essence of masterful craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Fit Notes: The M-43 Service Boots are available in a standard D width. The last runs large, so we recommend sizing down one full size from your standard US sneaker size or Brannock measurement. If you have wider feet, consider sizing down only half a size. In terms of fit, they are comparable to Red Wing boots (e.g., Lofgren M-43 size 9 ≈ Red Wing size 9), and similar to Viberg Service Boots as well.
