The desert boot began as a cheap shoe. British and South African soldiers stationed in Cairo during the Second World War had them made up in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar — a light, minimal chukka on a crepe sole, easy to produce in quantity — and the design crossed to America in the 1950s, where farmers and beatniks wore it alike, before becoming the shoe of the British mod from the 1960s through the 1980s. It has stayed in use for the simplest reasons: comfort and the ease of wearing it with almost anything.
John Lofgren Bootmaker keeps the shape and discards the economics. Where the original was built to be made quickly, the JLB Military Desert Boot is built to last: the upper, lining, leather insole and midsole are stitched together in a stitch-down, double-stitched construction, rather than the usual method of leaving the insole out of the build and gluing one in at the end. A leather midsole with a Japanese-made steel shank — absent from the traditional pattern — adds stability and allows upper, midsole and outsole to be sewn as one. The result is still light on the foot, but noticeably heavier and sturdier in the hand than any desert boot you have owned.
The upper is Japanese suede in sand, fully lined in Japanese leather, over an embossed, padded leather footbed; the crepe rubber sole and heel are Japanese-made as well, with a 1.25" heel and a 3.75" shaft. Each pair arrives in a Japanese-made John Lofgren Bootmaker box with dust bags. Made in Japan. Note that crepe soles may show darker patches on the sole: these come from the natural material and the manufacturing process, and are not a defect.
Fit Notes: The Military Desert Boots are available in a standard E width. The last runs large, so we recommend sizing down one full size from your standard US sneaker size or Brannock measurement. If you have wider feet, consider sizing down only half a size. In terms of fit, they are comparable to Red Wing boots (e.g., Lofgren Military Desert size 9 ≈ Red Wing size 9), and similar to Viberg Service Boots as well. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart to ensure the right fit.
