The John Lofgren Steel Gang SW (Storm Welt) Boots pay homage to the resilient men who laid railroad tracks in the logging industry. Robustly constructed to provide both protection and durability, these boots showcase a timeless early 20th-century design that transcends passing trends. True to the essence of all John Lofgren Bootmaker footwear, comfort remains a top priority — crafted by highly skilled artisans in Japan, every pair exemplifies uncompromising quality.
The uppers are crafted from one of Tuscany's finest leathers — the iconic Pueblo leather from Badalassi Carlo, in a striking bone color. This extra-thick 1.6mm cowhide is purely vegetable-tanned, showcasing a uniquely rustic, textured surface that sets it apart from standard chrome-tanned leathers. While initially slightly rough to the touch, the leather evolves into a silky smooth texture with a rich, distinctive patina over time — rewarding patience and daily wear with character unmatched by modern production.
The Badalassi Carlo tannery employs traditional vegetable tanning methods, using tree barks in a process with roots spanning centuries. Their commitment to these time-honored practices is underscored by their membership in the exclusive Pelle Vegetale Consortium, certifying strict adherence to traditional vegetal tanning standards.
Construction follows traditional Goodyear welt methodology, fortified with USA-made storm welts for enhanced water resistance and structural integrity. Heavy single, double, and triple stitching reinforces key stress areas, while Japanese-made steel shanks provide stability and long-term arch support.
The sole unit features USA-made Vibram 705 half soles paired with Vibram 700 heels — a combination that delivers traction, durability, and a refined vintage silhouette. An embossed padded leather heel pad adds all-day comfort. The boots sit on a distinctive 1.75" stacked woodsman heel with a 6" shaft, built on the John Lofgren 120 last.
Packaged with a Japanese-made John Lofgren Bootmaker box and dust bags.
Fit Notes: The Steel Gang SW Boots are available in a standard E width. The last runs large, so we recommend sizing down one full size from your standard US sneaker size or Brannock measurement. If you have wider feet, consider sizing down only half a size. In terms of fit, they are comparable to Red Wing boots (e.g., Lofgren Steel Gang size 9 ≈ Red Wing size 9), and similar to Viberg Service Boots as well. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart to ensure the right fit.
