"Yatsu-Giku" Shippo Charm Medium Ao Sky Blue
A handcrafted sterling silver charm featuring a traditional eight-petal chrysanthemum motif with vibrant Shippō enamel in sky blue.
The Kobashi Studio “Yatsu-Giku” Shippo Charm is a refined piece of Japanese craftsmanship that blends traditional symbolism with meticulous metalwork. Designed to pair perfectly with the Kobashi Studio Classic Silver Chain Necklace 3.1mm or the Kobashi Studio Classic Silver Chain Necklace 2.3mm, it offers a distinctive yet elegant addition to your necklace.
The design features the Yatsu-giku, a rare eight-petal chrysanthemum crest created using the traditional Japanese “Sukashi” openwork technique. In Japanese, Yatsu-giku literally means “eight-petal chrysanthemum.” The chrysanthemum is a long-standing symbol of longevity, renewal, and refinement in Japanese culture.
Measuring approximately 16 mm in diameter, the charm is crafted from solid sterling silver (925). The master mold was created by Kobashi Studio founder Junichi Kobashi, with a vintage-inspired handmade finish that embraces subtle file marks and natural variations—details that highlight the authenticity of artisanal craftsmanship.
At the center of the flower sits a piece of handcrafted Shippō-yaki enamel, created by firing Japanese glass enamel onto a silver base at approximately 800°C. This traditional process produces a deep, glossy finish with exceptional color clarity. The enamel glazes are still produced by a small family-run workshop in Saitama founded in 1967, preserving a rare and specialized craft.
The color Ao, meaning Sky Blue, is inspired by Japan’s clear blue skies and adds a vibrant yet elegant contrast to the silver openwork design.
Shippō-yaki is a historic Japanese enameling technique with over 400 years of history. Widely admired around the world in the early 20th century for its exceptional craftsmanship, it has become increasingly rare today due to limited materials and a declining number of skilled artisans. This charm respectfully preserves the tradition while presenting it in a contemporary form.
The backside of the charm is engraved with “Kobashi” in Japanese characters, reinforcing its authenticity and connection to the brand’s heritage.
Each piece is presented in a luxurious Japanese pig suede pouch, completing a small object that merges heritage craftsmanship with modern elegance.
