The ONI “Kase” Coverall brings the brand’s most expressive natural indigo denim into a timeless workwear silhouette, reinterpreting late 19th-century French chore coats through ONI’s extreme Japanese craftsmanship. Built from the same 16oz Kase denim as the jeans, this piece combines historical inspiration with one of the most character-rich fabrics ONI has ever produced.
The fabric draws inspiration from traditional kase-zome (hank dyeing), a method once widely used in Okayama where yarns were hand-dyed prior to weaving. While classic kase-dyed yarns absorb dye to the core—resulting in minimal fading—Oishi-san reengineers the concept by pairing the visual depth of kase-style dyeing with natural indigo rope dyeing, achieving a rare core-white structure. This allows the garment to develop real, high-contrast fades over time while retaining the layered, uneven color depth that defines kase aesthetics.
Woven at ultra-low tension on vintage shuttle looms, the 16oz selvedge denim is wildly irregular, packed with slub, nep, and visible rain-like streaking. The surface constantly shifts between deep indigo, inky navy, and electric blue highlights, creating a fabric that feels alive and continues to evolve dramatically with wear. As the coverall breaks in, the vertical fading and texture become even more pronounced, giving the piece unmistakable ONI character.
The design follows classic chore coat principles: functional, balanced, and built for daily wear. It features dual chest pockets—one external and one internal—for secure storage, along with large patch hand pockets at the waist. Construction is finished with custom ONI copper donut buttons, durable stitching, and signature ONI labeling. A one-wash treatment ensures dimensional stability, so no further shrinkage is expected while still allowing the fabric to age naturally.
Fit Notes: Despite being a Japanese-made jacket, like most ONI garments, the sizing of this jacket leans more Western than traditionally Japanese. If you typically wear a size M in American jackets, you’ll likely find a good fit with a size 40 (M) in this model. However, as always, we recommend checking our size chart to ensure the best fit. The jacket has been once-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected.
