First introduced in 2012, ONI’s Secret Denim quickly became one of the most revered fabrics in the world of Japanese denim. Known for its extreme texture, surprising softness, and fast-evolving fades, it has achieved near-mythical status among enthusiasts—largely through word of mouth alone.

This latest iteration pushes the concept further with an olive weft, adding warmth and depth to the fabric’s overall tone. Beneath the surface, the construction remains as compelling as ever. Woven using 3.7 x 3.7 ultra-thick yarns spun from a proprietary blend of three cotton types, the denim is crafted on vintage shuttle looms at ultra–low tension, resulting in a fabric that is both rugged and remarkably comfortable.

The 20oz unsanforized denim delivers a beefy, highly irregular texture, filled with slub, hairiness, and a raw, organic character that defines ONI at its best. The warp is rope-dyed using the brand’s secret indigo formula, producing a uniquely tinted blue, while the olive weft subtly shifts the tone, creating a richer, more dimensional appearance. As the denim breaks in, expect high-contrast fades, electric blue highlights, and a surface full of movement and character.

What makes Secret Denim truly special is not just its texture, but how it feels over time. Despite its weight, it softens significantly with wear—eventually developing a comfort level often compared to sweatpants, while retaining all the visual intensity of heavyweight denim.

The ONI 200 is a wide straight fit rooted in classic workwear proportions. Finished with ONI’s signature attention to detail, the jeans feature custom doughnut buttons, hidden rivets, raised belt loops, and a vegetable-tanned leather patch that will age beautifully over time. The iconic Kabuki selvedge ID adds a final heritage touch, referencing traditional Japanese theatre and marking this denim as part of ONI’s most distinctive lineage.

Fit Notes: This model fits true to size for ONI, meaning the tagged size closely matches the actual waist measurement. Compared to most global American brands, you will typically take the same size or possibly one size down depending on your preferred fit. The denim is unsanforized but has been one-washed, so no shrinkage is expected. Thanks to ONI’s signature ultra–low tension weave, the fabric will stretch significantly in the waist—typically up to 1.5–2 inches with regular wear. That said, we don’t recommend sizing down aggressively, as it may compromise both comfort and the intended fit.
