Asphalt is the right name. Dark, coarse and flecked with white, the surface of this 20oz denim looks more like tarmac than cloth, and it is where Oishi-san takes the two things ONI is known for — slub and nep — as far as they go. The yarn is spun with extreme variation in thickness, so the weave comes out rugged and irregular, and it is peppered with white cotton neps, the knots of short fiber most mills remove, which break the dark indigo surface with pale flecks. Woven on a shuttle loom at ultra-low tension, with a dark indigo warp over a white weft, it is one of the most tactile denims ONI has produced, and it is made in very limited quantities.

At this weight the fabric starts stiff and stays that way for a while; the reward is fading with real depth, where the neps and slubs catch the wear first and the indigo breaks unevenly around them.

The 222 is the widest cut in ONI's lineup: a super wide straight with a high rise, a relaxed waist and seat, and a leg that runs in one clean line to the hem with no taper. It takes oversized styling while keeping classic proportions, and it works with boots, sneakers or sandals alike.

Construction is ONI's own: custom copper doughnut buttons and hardware, punched copper rivets with hidden rivets on the back pockets, heavy-duty bar tacks, raised belt loops, a peek-a-boo selvedge coin pocket, cotton-lined front pockets and a vegetable-tanned cowhide leather patch, with the red selvedge ID at the outseam. Unsanforized and one-washed, ready to wear from the box. 100% cotton. Made in Japan.

Fit Notes: This model fits true to size — we recommend taking your usual size. The 222 is a super wide straight with a high rise and no taper, so it is meant to sit with room from the waist down. The denim is unsanforized but has been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected. With regular wear, the waistband will stretch approximately 1 inch, allowing the fit to settle comfortably over time. We don't recommend sizing down, as starting too tight may cause discomfort and alter the intended fit of the garment.
