The ONI Denim 275 Awa Sumi x Awa Sumi is one of the most ambitious and uncompromising releases ONI has ever produced. For the first time, master craftsman Oishi-san applies hand-dyed natural sumi — traditional Japanese charcoal ink made from soot and natural binders — to denim yarns. Both the warp and weft are hand-dyed with sumi at a Tokushima natural dyeing workshop designated as a cultural property, producing a deep, shadowed black tone full of subtle depth, irregular character, and atmospheric darkness.

The result is a 20oz selvedge denim unlike anything produced through modern industrial dyeing. Dark and smoky at first glance, the fabric reveals an ultra-slubby, textured grain with wear — the natural inconsistencies of hand-dyeing interacting with the organic movement of the yarn to create a surface that is alive with tonal variation. Woven on an antique shuttle loom at low tension, the fabric carries the intentional irregularity, organic rhythm, and visible human touch that define ONI's approach to denim.

Originally planned as a limited run, only 80 pairs were successfully completed due to the extreme difficulty of working with natural dyes and Oishi-san's strict quality standards. Each pair is individually numbered on the leather patch, a product of tradition, experimentation, and patience — a level of craftsmanship that may never be repeated.

The 275 fit is ONI's classic regular straight silhouette — cut with a high rise and offering a bit more comfort and room compared to the slimmer 288. Balanced, timeless, and versatile enough for everyday wear, whether with boots or sneakers.

Construction features ONI's signature custom copper doughnut buttons, original punched rivets, and a cowhide leather patch. The one-wash finish ensures no further shrinkage is expected.

Fit Notes: This model fits true to size for ONI, meaning the tagged size closely matches the actual waist measurement. Compared to most global American brands, sizing is similar, so you may take the same size or one size up. The denim is unsanforized but has been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected. With regular wear, the waistband will stretch approximately 1 inch, allowing the fit to settle comfortably over time. We don't recommend sizing down, as starting too tight may cause discomfort and alter the intended fit of the garment.
