The Shellcap Low Sneakers from PRAS (Paradise Rubber Athletic Shoes) have everything you could want in a low-top sneaker made in Japan. They feature a bulbous shellcap toe box and non-slip soles based on 1950s athletic sneakers. The kiln-fired vulcanization process, unique to Kurume, Japan, adds to their appeal. Additionally, the red stitch and vintage-inspired heel panel provide a final pop of color.
This version has been hand-dyed with Sumi, an all-natural dye made from burnt pinewood commonly used in Japanese calligraphy. As a result, they have a mildly distressed color that is uniquely achieved through this natural dyeing process and will show impressive fading over time.
Due to the labor-intensive nature of dyeing with natural dyes like Sumi, only a small production lot of these sneakers can be made.
The vulcanization method used in the manufacturing process combines the strong bond between the sole and upper, a hard-to-peel-off sole, and a form that is difficult to lose. This method involves joining the rubber sole and shoe body together using heat and pressure in a sulfur-added kiln. The sneakers are subjected to pressure and heat at over 100 degrees Celsius for approximately one hour in the kiln. The vulcanization method is predominantly carried out by hand, requiring a significant amount of labor, time, and effort, resulting in lower production efficiency. Consequently, the number of companies using this method has dramatically decreased. Currently, only three companies in Japan, including PRAS, are producing sneakers using the vulcanization method. These sneakers are manufactured in the same way as those provided to navy sailors during times of war, as the vulcanized sole provided them with extra traction on the slippery platforms of ships. They are known for their exceptional quality and utmost comfort.
The factory in Kurume, with nearly 150 years of history, will continue to preserve the vulcanization method and share its excellent quality with the world. Each pair of these sneakers is akin to artisan ceramics.
