This limited edition of the classic Pras Shellcap Low Sneakers, featuring premium vegetable tanned leather accents, embodies everything you desire in a high-quality, made-in-Japan low-top sneaker. They boast a bulbous shellcap toe box, non-slip soles inspired by 1950s athletic sneakers, and showcase the exclusive kiln-fired vulcanization process unique to Kurume, Japan. The meticulous addition of luxurious leather details further elevates their appeal.
Crafted with attention to detail, the 100% Hanpu cotton canvas upper is carefully woven in Kojima using an old Toyoda GL9 shuttle loom.
The combined functions of the strong sole and upper bond, the peel-resistant sole, and the form that maintains its shape are all perfected through the vulcanization method.
The vulcanization process involves joining the rubber sole and shoe body together, subjecting them to heat and pressure within a kiln enriched with sulfur. Maintaining temperatures over 100 degrees Celsius for approximately one hour, the sneakers undergo meticulous pressure and heat treatment in the kiln. The vulcanization method is primarily carried out by skilled artisans, requiring significant labor, time, and effort, resulting in a lower production efficiency. As a result, the number of companies utilizing this method has dramatically decreased. Presently, it is known that only three companies in Japan, including PRAS, continue to produce sneakers using the vulcanization method. These sneakers are manufactured with the same attention to detail as those provided to navy sailors during times of war, as the vulcanized sole provided them with enhanced traction on slippery ship platforms. They represent a product of exceptional quality and unparalleled comfort.
The factory in Kurume, with an illustrious history spanning nearly 150 years, remains dedicated to preserving the 'vulcanization method' and sharing its outstanding quality with the world. Each pair of these limited edition sneakers showcases the craftsmanship akin to artisan ceramics, with exquisite leather details adding a touch of luxury and exclusivity.
