The Redcast Heritage "Tsuri-Ami" Loopwheel Heavy T-Shirt is the result of years of searching for the perfect Japanese heavyweight basic. While high-quality Japanese loopwheel tees have long been celebrated, finding one with true Western sizing and fit has remained a persistent challenge. The Redcast Quality Goods line — our in-house brand dedicated to perfecting wardrobe essentials — was created to bridge that gap, combining traditional Wakayama craftsmanship with proportions tailored to Western expectations.

The fabric is knitted in Wakayama, Japan on vintage tsuri-ami (loopwheel) machines dating back to the 1920s. At 8.2oz (280gsm), this heavyweight construction sits in the sweet spot between durability and comfort — heavy enough to drape beautifully, yet wearable year-round.

Unlike conventional high-speed knitting, tsuri-ami machines operate on a gravity-fed system, slowly knitting fabric with minimal tension at just one meter per hour — producing only 16 meters of fabric per day compared to the 200 meters possible on modern equipment. This slow process allows the cotton fibers to relax naturally, creating a fabric with unparalleled softness, distinctive slubby texture, and enhanced longevity. The irregular knit pattern evolves with wear and washing, gradually revealing the iconic circular knit structure underneath. The yarn itself is premium long-staple cotton, carefully selected for strength, smoothness, and durability.

Construction details have been meticulously refined. The triple-stitched collar, reinforced with a specialized three-needle technique, ensures long-lasting structure, while custom-designed woven tags add a refined touch. To achieve the right fit across the full size range while respecting the limitations of vintage machines, sizes S and M utilize the full circumference of the 1920s loopwheel for truly seamless garments, while sizes L to XXL require side seams due to the smaller diameter of the original machines. For these larger sizes, we use Union Special flat side seam construction — an approach inspired by vintage sweatshirts that delivers both comfort and durability with a smooth, polished finish.

Each two-pack is delivered in a sturdy 360g textured cardboard box featuring our signature blend of indigo and Redcast colors, finished with a custom Redcast copper button on the flap — a subtle nod to the classic button-fly closures of heritage jeans.

Fit Notes: This T-shirt fits true to size. Compared to most global American brands, a size M fits similarly to a standard American Medium. We recommend taking your usual size for a comfortable fit. The fabric has been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected.
