If one pair stands for Samurai Jeans, it is this one: the brand’s 15oz regular straight, cut in the denim the brand calls Otokogi. The yarn is a slubby #6 cotton thread spun with the small bits of cotton waste deliberately left in the mix, and the cloth is woven on vintage shuttle looms run to the edge of what they can take. What comes off the loom is rough in look and in hand, with neps and slub breaking the surface — and it is exactly that irregularity that produces the high-contrast fades this fabric is known for. The silver lamé selvedge runs the outseam, the brand’s reference to the Japanese sword.

The rest of the hardware follows suit — iron “hinode” sunrise buttons, copper coin-shaped rivets, an exclusive flasher, and pocket bags jacquard-woven with “shogyo mujo” (諸行無常), “all things must pass” — a reminder stitched into a garment that will prove it.
