Two counts of indigo yarn, two speeds of fading. Samurai's Seigaiha denim pairs a #5 rope-dyed indigo warp with a particularly strong slub against a thinner #8 indigo weft, dyed considerably darker by a different method. Because the weft is finer, the slubby texture and strong blue of the warp dominate at first; because the two yarns fade at different rates, the dark indigo of the weft comes forward over time, and the denim ends up somewhere no single-dyed fabric can go — layered, deep, and still changing. Spun from Texas cotton and woven slowly on old shuttle looms to 15oz, it is dyed with 100% indigo throughout.

The name is a pattern: seigaiha, "blue ocean wave," the endless rows of gentle arcs found on kimono and ceramics, an auspicious motif carrying the wish that a peaceful life should go on forever. Samurai builds the story into the details — a red-painted "hinode" sunrise top button stands for the sun over a calm sea, and the pocket lining is jacquard-woven with "shogyo mujo" (諸行無常), the impermanence of all things, which is what a pair of jeans is about anyway.

The cut is the S3000, based on the shape of the S3000VXII, a slightly wide straight jean modified from wartime specifications: a mid-to-high rise (11.4" at the front on a 32), a generous thigh and a straight leg with very little taper to an 8.5" opening — the roomy 1940s proportion done cleanly.

Construction is Samurai's: hammered copper rivets at the stress points engraved with サムライ, extra-heavy stitching, raised belt loops, reinforcement at every point of strain and the brand's original silver lamé selvedge ID. One-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected. Made in Japan.

Fit Notes: This model runs slightly small: the waist measures just under the tagged size. Compared to most global American brands, we recommend sizing up one from your usual size. The S3000 is a relaxed wide straight with a mid-to-high rise, a generous thigh and minimal taper, and the extra size keeps those proportions as intended. The denim has been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected; the waistband will give slightly with wear. We don't recommend sizing down, as starting too tight may cause discomfort and alter the intended fit of the garment.
