Kites were the common people's pastime of the Edo period. The real ones were built of tough Japanese paper and painted in ink with warrior figures — musha-e — and they were flown as much for luck as for play: at the turning points of the seasons, to wish a child growth, a man advancement, a household good health. Kite-making has survived as a craft, and Samurai Jeans puts that tradition on the back of this tee.
The fabric behind the print is the point. Cotton normally travels compressed into bales; Samurai lets its cotton mature for 30 to 50 days in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room until the crushed fiber recovers its original plumpness, and only then spins it into thread. That thread goes onto a vintage loopwheel machine in Wakayama — machines that on a normal day manage about a meter of fabric an hour. Here, because the high-gauge thread and inlay knitting are so demanding, output falls to roughly 48 cm an hour.
The artwork takes the back: a musha-e warrior drawn on the face of a kite, tilted in flight with its lines trailing behind it, printed in navy, orange and red against the ivory ground. Above it the SAMURAI arch, below it the brand's "Made in Japan — Genuine Indigo Denim" lettering and a small "Extra Tough" script beside the kite — the graphic language of a vintage souvenir tee, done in Samurai's own hand.
What the slow knitting buys is a small quantity of cloth with a very particular hand: soft, almost moist to the touch, and unusually thick for a loopwheel knit, yet with less stretch than a standard hanging-knit jersey, so it holds its shape. The body comes off the machine as a tube, but the silhouette has been thought through as well, with split sides at the hem for an easier drape. 100% cotton. Made in Japan.
Fit Notes: This T-shirt runs small. Compared to most global American brands, we recommend sizing up one from your usual size. The high-gauge inlay knit is thick and stretches less than a standard loopwheel fabric, so it will not give much with wear; the body is knitted as a tube, with split sides for an easier drape over the hips. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it with your best-fitting garment to ensure the right fit.
