Every pair of these jeans travels more than a thousand kilometers before it earns its color. Sewn in an undyed ecru state, they are sent to Amami Oshima, the island group north of Okinawa, where a handful of shokunin still practice dorozome — traditional Japanese mud dyeing — and each pair is dyed individually by hand. Every pass through the dye and the mud leaves its own variations, so no two pairs are identical.

Dorozome runs deep in the island's history, where it was long used to dye the silk for Oshima Tsumugi kimono. The process pairs two natural materials: a tannin-rich dye boiled from chips of the sharinbai tree — techi in the Amami dialect — and iron-rich mud drawn from strata more than 1.5 million years old. Repeated baths in dye and mud let the tannins and iron react and oxidize in the fiber, building a deep, warm brown-black with a depth that synthetic dyes cannot replicate.

The cloth underneath is as traditional as the color on top: 17oz Bushu sashiko fabric, the densely textured weave historically made for warmth and reinforcement and still used today in kendo and judo uniforms. Its strength and raised, stitch-like surface carry that working heritage into a five-pocket cut, and the repeated high-temperature washing of the dye process leaves the fabric stable, with its texture fully opened up.

The silhouette is a regular straight based on Studio D'Artisan's classic SD-101 pattern, with a mid-high rise. Details follow the house standard: natural nut buttons on the fly, engraved copper rivets with hidden rivets on the back pockets, a chainstitched back yoke, herringbone pocket bags, a cowhide leather waistband patch and the brand's signature offset center belt loop. 100% cotton. Made in Japan.

Fit Notes: These jeans fit true to size — we recommend taking your usual size. The repeated high-temperature washing during the mud-dyeing process takes the shrinkage out of the fabric, so the measurements will hold, and you can expect the waist to stretch about 1" with wear as the sashiko cloth breaks in. We don't recommend sizing down, as starting too tight may cause discomfort and alter the intended fit of the garment.
