This Studio D'Artisan shirt combines a naturally textured cotton-linen canvas with the centuries-old Dorozome mud-dyeing tradition of Japan's Amami Oshima islands.
The medium-weight 13oz canvas blends breathable cotton (86%) with linen (14%), creating a fabric that feels substantial yet comfortable in warm weather. Before dyeing, each shirt is carefully washed over an extended period in a specialized process that softens the cloth while developing its naturally wrinkled surface. The result is a relaxed, broken-in character that feels comfortable from the very first wear.
The real story begins on Amami Oshima — a remote island between Kyushu and Okinawa. Here, every shirt is individually hand-dyed using tannins extracted from the native Techi (Sharinbai) tree and iron-rich mud formed from geological layers over 1.5 million years old. Through repeated immersion in plant dye and mineral-rich mud, the fabric develops rich, earthy tones with remarkable depth and warmth — hues that cannot be reproduced by synthetic dyes. Each shirt emerges with subtle tonal variations, making every piece one of a kind, and allowing the natural colors to gain even more character over years of wear.
The silhouette is a regular fit open-collar shirt, finished with a single chest pocket and natural Tagua nut buttons — plus a woven Amami Dorozome label that quietly signals the shirt's provenance.
Fit Notes: This shirt fits true to size for Studio D'Artisan and most Japanese brands. Compared to most global American brands, a size 42 fits similarly to a standard American Large. We recommend taking your usual size for a comfortable fit. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it with your best-fitting shirt to find the perfect size.
