The Studio D'Artisan 8198 Amami Oshima Mud-Dyed Loopwheel T-Shirt brings together two of the most labor-intensive textile traditions Japan has to offer. The base fabric is knit on a traditional loopwheel machine, spinning slowly under the weight of the yarn alone to produce a softness and subtle irregularity that modern knitting equipment simply cannot replicate.

The dyeing process is where it becomes truly extraordinary. Amami Mud Dyeing is a tradition native to Amami Oshima, built on the tannin-rich dye of the Techi tree (wheel plum) combined with iron-rich mud drawn from strata over 1.5 million years old. The two react with each other directly on the fabric — a process that requires repeated dyeing and mud-bathing cycles, each one deepening the color and locking in a warmth and richness that no synthetic dye can approach.

The resulting dark brown is entirely its own — a color that shifts and deepens as it catches the light, and one that will continue to develop its own character with every wear. Because each piece is individually dyed by hand, no two T-shirts are exactly alike — every garment carries its own subtle variation, shaped by the materials, the mud, and the hands of the artisans involved.
