The name "Futa-Ai" literally means "two indigos" — a reference to the layered dyeing process that produces this distinctive color. The hue itself dates back to the Heian period, where it was once reserved exclusively for the aristocracy as a symbol of elegance, refinement, and status within Japan's classical hierarchy. The combination of indigo's depth and safflower's vivid warmth produces a beautifully nuanced purple-toned shade unlike anything in conventional denim — a color born from centuries of Japanese dyeing tradition.

Both the warp and weft are constructed from textured 6-count slub yarns, giving the denim a rugged surface and pronounced vertical character. At 16oz, the fabric carries a heavyweight, substantial feel with exceptional depth, while revealing at first glance the distinctive vertical "rain" streaking that defines naturally indigo-dyed cloth. The fabric is woven on vintage power looms in Ibara, Okayama Prefecture — one of Japan's most renowned denim-producing regions.

The silhouette is Studio D'Artisan's classic regular straight fit — with a moderately deep rise and a thigh circumference that is neither too wide nor too narrow, delivering a well-balanced, timeless profile that pairs effortlessly with boots or sneakers.

Construction details reflect the brand's signature attention to refinement. The jeans feature a 4-button fly with original Studio D'Artisan engraved metal buttons, engraved copper male/female rivets, herringbone pocket bags, a fifth pocket selvedge detail, off-center belt loops, and the brand's original back pocket stitch. An original "Futa-Ai" cowhide leather waistband patch completes the package.

Fit Notes: These jeans fit true to size. Compared to most global American brands, sizing is consistent — we recommend taking your usual size for a comfortable fit. The denim is unsanforized but has been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected.
