The Studio D’Artisan D1905 15oz “Awa Sho-Ai Kakishibu” Regular Straight Jeans represent one of the most complex and meaningful expressions of natural dyeing in modern Japanese denim. Produced in limited quantities and crafted using centuries-old techniques, this denim brings together Awa Sho-Ai natural indigo and Kakishibu persimmon dye to create a fabric that is not only visually unique, but alive with character from day one.
The 15oz unsanforized selvedge denim is woven from 100% cotton, using thicker, specially prepared yarns that respond dramatically to the natural dyeing process. The warp yarns are dyed using the legendary Awa Sho-Ai Aizome fermentation method, a traditional indigo technique passed down since the Edo period. This method does not produce a single flat blue, but instead builds depth through repeated cycles of dyeing, airing, oxidizing, and washing—often close to 30 separate wash cycles—resulting in layered tones that shift between deep blue, green-blue, dark crimson, and near-black indigo. This also gives the fabric natural antibacterial and insect-repellent properties, a reason this indigo was historically prized for workwear and daily clothing.
The weft yarns are dyed using Kakishibu, a traditional Japanese dye extracted from fermented persimmon tannins. Applied through a natural sun-oxidizing process, the color continues to evolve through exposure to air and light, deepening over time into rich brown, bronze, and earthy amber tones. Combined with the thicker, slub-textured yarns, this creates a denim with a distinctly structured hand feel, uneven texture, and powerful visual depth that stands far apart from standard 15oz denim.
The result is a fabric that feels dense and substantial while still breathing naturally, designed to fade, darken, and transform dramatically with wear. No two pairs will age the same, making each set of jeans a truly personal garment.
The D1905 is cut in a regular straight fit with a mid-high rise, rooted in classic workwear proportions and built for long-term comfort. Construction details reflect Studio D’Artisan’s obsessive standards, including custom SDA metal buttons on a four-button fly, engraved copper rivets, herringbone pocket bags, a selvedge fifth pocket detail, and the brand’s signature original back pocket stitching. The waistband is finished with a thick “Awa Sho-Ai Kakishibu” cowhide leather patch, stitched on after the initial wash to ensure the best possible aging and texture. A center-offset belt loop completes the traditional workwear layout.
Fit Notes: Studio D’Artisan jeans often run slightly small, but this is not the case with the D1905 Kakishibu model. We find these jeans to fit true to size, so we recommend selecting your usual size. As always, we suggest consulting the size chart to ensure the best possible fit. Although the fabric is unsanforized, the jeans have been pre-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected.
