The Studio D'Artisan D4614 introduces one of the most innovative selvedge compositions seen to date: the 二藍 (Futa-Ai) denim, featuring warp yarns dyed in a historic blend of natural indigo and safflower.
The name "Futa-Ai" literally means "two indigos" — a reference to the layered dyeing process that produces this distinctive color. The hue itself dates back to the Heian period, where it was once reserved exclusively for the aristocracy as a symbol of elegance, refinement, and status within Japan's classical hierarchy. The combination of indigo's depth and safflower's vivid warmth produces a beautifully nuanced purple-toned shade unlike anything in conventional denim — a color born from centuries of Japanese dyeing tradition.
Both the warp and weft are constructed from textured 6-count slub yarns, giving the denim a rugged surface and pronounced vertical character. At 16oz, the fabric carries a heavyweight, substantial feel with exceptional depth, while revealing at first glance the distinctive vertical "rain" streaking that defines naturally indigo-dyed cloth. The fabric is woven on vintage power looms in Ibara, Okayama Prefecture — one of Japan's most renowned denim-producing regions.
The jacket itself is a meticulous reproduction of one of the defining garments of early American workwear. Based on original jackets from the mid-1930s, it captures a pivotal moment in denim history — when functionality, durability, and evolving design came together to shape what would become an enduring icon.
True to original specifications, the this type I features a short, boxy silhouette with wide sleeves, designed to sit higher on the body. This proportion pairs naturally with high-rise jeans or trousers, creating a balanced, vintage-inspired look that feels as relevant today as it did nearly a century ago.
Fit Notes: This jacket fits true to size for Studio D'Artisan and most Japanese brands. Compared to most global American brands, a size 42 fits similarly to a standard American Large. We recommend taking your usual size for a comfortable fit. The fabric is unsanforized but has been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it with your best-fitting jacket to find the perfect size.
