The Studio D’Artisan D4615 “Awa Sho-Ai Kakishibu” Jacket stands as one of the most expressive examples of natural dyeing in modern denim. Produced in limited quantities, it combines two of Japan’s most traditional dyeing techniques to create a fabric that is not only visually striking, but deeply rooted in history and craftsmanship.

The denim is woven from 15oz unsanforized selvedge cotton, using thicker yarns designed to fully absorb and respond to natural dyes. The warp is dyed using the legendary Awa Sho-Ai indigo fermentation method, a process dating back to the Edo period. Through repeated cycles of dyeing, oxidizing, and washing—sometimes up to 30 times—the fabric develops layered, shifting tones that move between deep indigo, green-blue, near-black, and even subtle crimson undertones. This method also imparts natural antibacterial and insect-repellent properties, historically valued in everyday garments.

The weft introduces an entirely different dimension. Dyed with Kakishibu persimmon tannin, it undergoes a natural oxidation process that evolves over time with exposure to air and light. This results in warm, earthy tones ranging from bronze to deep brown, adding further depth and contrast beneath the indigo surface.

Combined with the use of thicker, slub-textured yarns, the fabric presents a dense, structured hand feel with a highly irregular surface. Over time, it will not only fade but transform—developing a patina unlike any conventional denim. No two pieces will age the same, making each jacket a truly personal garment.

The silhouette follows the classic Type II design, featuring a slightly cropped length, structured body, and practical detailing. It pairs naturally with high-rise jeans or trousers, creating a balanced, heritage-inspired look that feels both authentic and modern.

Construction reflects Studio D’Artisan’s attention to detail, with custom embossed metal buttons, engraved copper rivets, and double chest pockets. The jacket is finished with a signature “Awa Sho-Ai Kakishibu” leather patch, applied after washing to enhance texture and aging potential. Subtle details such as a selvedge collar insert and adjustable waist tabs complete the design.
