Studio D'Artisan's SD-1001E "GL3" selvedge denim takes its name from the historic loom that weaves it. The Toyoda GL3 is the younger sibling of the legendary G3 shuttle loom — a groundbreaking machine still prized today by a handful of diehard Japanese makers.

The story begins in 1924, when Toyoda — the parent company of Toyota Automobile — patented its groundbreaking Model G Loom. This innovation eventually licensed the technology that financed the founding of the Toyota car company in 1937. The G3 shuttle loom later became renowned as the first machine to weave Japanese selvedge denim domestically, and the GL3 continued that legacy with further refinement.

For this ecru series, Studio D'Artisan calibrated every element of the production process. Expertly fine-tuned, the GL3 produces a lower-tension weave, giving every crisscross of warp and weft extra texture and depth — a richness no modern machine can match. To push the character further, the team selected a No.7 super-slub yarn, producing denim with real presence and heft.

At 15oz, the fabric is substantial yet remains an easy all-year-rounder — thanks to a balanced combination of weight and breathability. The finished cloth is a wonder to behold: rich in woven character with a natural ecru finish that will gradually whiten and develop unique wear patterns over time.

The SD-1001 is Studio D'Artisan's classic straight-cut denim — featuring a mid-to-high rise and a clean, sharp finish through the thigh, leg, knee, and hem. Well-balanced, comfortable, and timeless.

Construction details reflect the brand's signature obsession with quality. The jeans feature an original 4-button fly with Studio D'Artisan engraved buttons, selvedge button fly construction, engraved copper male/female rivets, heavy duck canvas pocket bags, a fifth pocket selvedge detail, center belt loop offset, and the brand's original back pocket stitch. An original goat leather waistband patch completes the package.

Fit Notes: This model fits between true to size and slightly small. Compared to most global American brands, we recommend sizing up one from your usual size for the intended fit. The denim is unsanforized but has been one-washed, so no further shrinkage is expected. With regular wear, the waistband will stretch approximately 1 inch, allowing the fit to settle comfortably over time.
