Introducing the Sugar Cane 1953 Type II denim jacket in a contemporary stonewash version, ideal for those who prefer an instantly worn-in look without the wait. Inspired by the iconic Levi's Type II from the 1950s, this jacket represents a transitional period when denim evolved from workwear to casual wear in the US. Sugar Cane's meticulous reproduction process, from spinning and weaving to dyeing and stitching, ensures an authentic homage to the timeless classic.
The stonewash edition offers a clean, natural appearance achieved through collaboration with a renowned wash house. Sugar Cane's dedication to replicating the vintage denim charm remains evident, even in this accelerated aging process. Crafted with the same attention to detail, this jacket features a blend of American and Zimbabwe cotton yarns, mimicking the irregular yarn thickness of the original for an authentic, uneven fade. The weaving process is slow and time-consuming, producing only a limited amount of fabric per day on vintage Toyoda shuttle looms. The weft is then forcefully driven in, causing the yarns to overlap and resulting in an uneven surface and a tight weave. Whether worn with raw denim jeans or a solid t-shirt, this stonewash version effortlessly captures the essence of a naturally aged denim jacket.
Despite being a Japanese jacket, we find the sizing of this Type II to be more Western than Japanese. If you usually wear a size M in American jackets, you'll find a suitable fit with this jacket in size 40 (M). However, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the perfect fit. It is unsanforized but one washed, so there will be no shrinkage.
Although Sugar Cane was born in Japan, its spirit and creation are true to proper American manner from the experience learned at the Army base. By mainly utilizing the denim materials, the ultimate American style symbol, the label has been manufacturing true workwear since 1975. Sugar Cane comprise a blend of traditional dyeing techniques and styling with innovation and creativity in textile development. Their jeans represent the higher end of Japanese selvedge denim.
