TCB started with the 50's. Thirteen years ago they were the first jeans the brand made — its first answer to the question of what the best jeans are — and every pair since has been measured against them: wider or slimmer, heavier or lighter, this tinge of indigo or that. When TCB began shipping overseas it drew a Slim 50's for foreign customers, the way Japanese cars are converted to left-hand drive for export. The Baggy 50's comes from the opposite direction. Young staff at TCB had been customizing the 50's pattern and wearing it baggy, and Inoue-san decided it deserved a proper shape — the same instinct that once had mods shrinking jeans in the bath and skaters buying them oversized. One pattern, read by a new generation.

Fabric and sewing specifications are exactly those of the 50's. The denim is approx. 13.5oz, 100% Zimbabwe cotton, woven on a vintage loom rather than a computer-regulated one, so the yarn thickness and tension vary naturally across the cloth. It fades the vintage way: white dots appear first, then join into long vertical lines. What changes is the silhouette — a modern wide cut with plenty of room through the hips, thighs and hem, on a high-set rise (12.2" at the front on a 32), with a slight taper to a 8.9" opening.

The construction is TCB's reproduction work at its most detailed. The paper patch is sewn on by hand, and around the time the fades come good it begins to tear, showing the dark blue beneath. Hidden rivets on the back pockets are attached by the most durable of the many period methods. Sewing thread is 100% cotton in four colors and five yarn counts, with seam widths matched to the vintage piece TCB owns and the vintage machines set up accordingly — down to the pocket bags, which were roughly sewn on the originals and are roughly sewn here, with the durability kept. Designed and made in Kojima, Japan.

Fit Notes: This model runs small: the waist measures 1–1.3" under the tagged size, roughly 2" less than a typical American pair of the same number. Compared to most global American brands, we recommend sizing up one from your usual size; in the larger sizes (36–38) the gap widens, so you may need to go up two. The cut is a baggy straight with a high-set rise, wide through the hips and thighs and roomy to the hem; the denim will give slightly at the waist with wear. We don't recommend sizing down, as starting too tight may cause discomfort and alter the intended fit of the garment.
