The Flat Head DB004 Wide Tapered Jeans reinterpret one of denim’s earliest and most intriguing ideas: black denim as it might have existed in the early 1900s. Drawing inspiration from historical records of early black denim production, this model explores how a sulfur-dyed black warp paired with an undyed natural weft would evolve over time—resulting in a fabric built for depth, contrast, and exceptional aging.

The original 12.5oz selvedge denim is woven on vintage Toyoda G3 shuttle looms using carefully developed slub yarns. The warp is sulfur-dyed black, while the weft remains natural ecru, allowing contrast to emerge gradually with wear. As the denim fades, the interaction between the dark warp and light weft produces nuanced highlights, subtle vertical streaking, and a uniquely vintage fade pattern rarely seen in modern black jeans.

Construction is uncompromising throughout. Key stress areas are reinforced with double-needle chain-stitched seams, delivering both durability and the signature puckering that develops into rich three-dimensional fading over time. The back yoke is stitched using The Flat Head’s proprietary “8” yarn, the thickest thread in their arsenal, emphasizing strength and authentic vintage character.

Details are executed with equal care: a button fly fitted with custom iron buttons engraved with “FLAT HEAD & CO HIGHEST”, copper-plated iron hidden rivets, oversized copper rivets inspired by 1940s workwear, and raised belt loops for added reinforcement. A deerskin leather patch featuring The Flat Head’s iconic flying wheel completes the piece, designed to age beautifully alongside the denim.

The wide tapered fit offers a modern balance of comfort and structure. A mid–high rise and generous seat and thigh provide ease of movement, while a gradual taper from the knee down keeps the silhouette clean and controlled—relaxed without excess volume.
