The Atlas work shirt draws inspiration from the classic work shirt style of the 1910s and 1920s, offering year-round comfort for both labor and leisure.
Crafted from a durable 6.5oz medium-weight fabric known as selvedge salt & pepper chambray, milled exclusively in Japan, it stands as one of the last remaining fabrics of its kind worldwide.
The Atlas shirt pays homage to the 1930s era with meticulous details, including the 'chinstrap' (originally called an 'extension neckband') for a snug, weather-resistant fit. It features ecru stitching, including period-correct chainstitching, and a high, slim back yoke reminiscent of early 1900s work shirts. The foldover cuffs, distinctive pocket shapes, and urea cat's eye buttons add to its character. Completing the package are selvedge gussets, chainstitch run-off, and a garment workers' tag bearing the assurance of ethical production for all The Rite Stuff items.
For returning customers, the new Atlas shirt boasts a slightly extended length to ensure a better tuck-in and a straighter cut with no waist taper, delivering an authentic period-correct fit.
As always, the Atlas shirt is meticulously crafted in Japan by John Lofgren & Co., upholding John's exacting standards for quality and ensuring fair treatment of workers at every stage of production.
The term "covert," pronounced as "cover," traces its origins to fox hunting in England, where it referred to a fox's hiding place and the starting point for hunts. Covert cloths, originating in the late 1800s, were typically dark grey and created by twisting different-colored yarns before weaving. The result was a visually appealing fabric resistant to dirt and wear.
