Salt-and-pepper cloth belongs to the railroad era of American workwear — the mottled grey shirting worn by engineers and section crews in the early decades of the twentieth century. The Railhead reproduces an early 1930s Washington Dee Cee work shirt from The Rite Stuff's own archive, cut in a 5oz selvedge salt & pepper mock twist chambray milled in Japan. The grey sits in the yarn itself, spun from dark and undyed cotton twisted together, which gives the Iron Grey surface its fine pepper grain and lets it fade the way the originals did.
What marks the pattern as a true working shirt is the specialization of its pockets. One chest pocket carries a watch compartment and a pencil slot, backed by an extra buttonhole on the placket for securing a watch chain and T-bar; the other is a flapped bellows pocket, pleated for real carry rather than show.
Construction follows the source garment closely. The collar keeps its period-correct shape and length with a traditional chinstrap extension. The cuffs are attached with single-needle construction, a detail that largely disappeared from shirtmaking after 1930, while all major seams are triple-stitched and the bottom side seams finish in selvedge gussets. The enamel-painted dome metal buttons, also made in Japan, are meant to chip and patina with wear rather than stay uniform.
The cut keeps the working proportions of the original: roomy armholes, generous sleeves and comfortable cuffs, built for movement and long days rather than a slim line. The fabric comes pre-shrunk, so the measurements you buy are the measurements you keep. 100% cotton. Made in Japan.
Fit Notes: The Railhead fits true to size compared to most global American brands — we recommend taking your usual size. Keep in mind this is a work-shirt cut: roomy through the chest and armholes with generous sleeves, so the fit is comfortable rather than slim, and the pre-shrunk fabric means those measurements will hold. As always, we strongly recommend checking our size chart and comparing it with your best-fitting garment to ensure the right fit.
