The 1950s were the decade the T-shirt stopped being underwear — the era Brando and Dean wore it on screen and made the plain crew neck a garment in its own right. This tee reproduces that silhouette in the way Merz b. Schwanen does everything: knitted on rare, 100-year-old loopwheel machines in the Swabian Alps of southwestern Germany, machines that turn slowly and let gravity set the tension of the fabric rather than pulling it tight.
The result is a single-thread, 4.6oz (155 g/m²) jersey in 100% organic cotton — the lightweight counterpart to the brand's heavier two-thread fabrics, ultra-soft against the skin and easy to wear in any season. The cloth is all-natural and fully recyclable, and because it comes off the loopwheel as a tube, the body is knitted without side seams.
The cut is the brand's classic fit: tubular, close to the body and timeless, never tight, with a paneled classic crew neck, triangular underarm inserts and cut sleeve hems. The shirt is regular length, with 1–2" of extra length built in by size to account for the first wash. Part of THE ORIGINALS line — made in Germany, crafted for timeless style and lasting comfort.
Fit Notes: The 1950s tee has a tubular classic fit — close to the body, never tight — and Merz classic fit runs a bit smaller than your regular American size. If you typically wear a size M in American T-shirts, we recommend a size L. The shirt is not industrially pre-washed: expect approximately 3% shrinkage in length (2–3 cm) after the first wash. This shrinkage is already calculated into the cut and extra length is added, so it may seem a little long the first time you try it on — after the first wash, it settles into its intended fit. However, individual body types can vary, so, as always, we recommend consulting our size chart for the perfect fit.
